Thailand: Regains Malaysia rice market lead as exports rise in 2026

  • Thailand accounts for 46% of Malaysia’s imports in H1 2026
  • Thai rice exports to Malaysia forecast to exceed 700,000 t in 2026

Thailand reclaimed its position as Malaysia’s largest rice supplier in the first half of 2026, overtaking Vietnam and India as demand for Thai white rice strengthened. Malaysia imported 327,995 t of rice from Thailand during January-June 2026. Thai rice accounted for approximately 46% of Malaysia’s total rice imports of 710,656 t during the period. Vietnam ranked second with 232,416 t, followed by India with 62,115 t and Cambodia with 57,602 t.

Thai rice imports to Malaysia surge

Malaysia’s rice imports from Thailand during the first six months of 2026 had already surpassed the 264,605 t purchased throughout 2025. Thailand’s increased share reflects renewed demand for its rice in the Malaysian market. Most of Malaysia’s imports from Thailand consist of white rice. Consumers in Peninsular Malaysia favour rice with a relatively firm texture that expands well when cooked, characteristics associated with Thai white rice.

Quality and delivery support demand

Malaysian buyers also consider product quality, continuity of supply and punctual delivery, which support demand for Thai rice. Suppliers have been encouraged to maintain the quality of Thai white rice to meet Malaysian consumer preferences. Thai Hom Mali rice and other Thai fragrant varieties also retain opportunities among quality-conscious consumers, although they face price competition from fragrant rice supplied by rival exporting countries.

Exports seen above 700,000 t in 2026

The DFT forecasts that Thailand’s rice exports to Malaysia could exceed 700,000 t in 2026. If achieved, this would be the highest annual volume shipped to the Malaysian market in more than 20 years. The department plans to work with private-sector exporters to maintain quality standards and expand the market for both Thai white rice and higher-quality varieties.

Outlook

Thailand’s position in Malaysia’s rice market could strengthen further if current buying momentum is sustained. However, competition from other suppliers, particularly in the the fragrant rice segment may remain competitive, while overall market demand and supplier pricing could influence the pace of further growth.
