South Korean Coal Imports Down 3% in Jan’17

South Korea coal imports have declined on Monthly basis in the first month of CY17. However yearly coal imports have risen by 7%.

South Korea, major coal importers after China, Japan and India, witnessed their coal imports down by3% to 13.68 MnT in Jan’17.Imports have however increased on yearly basis by 7% compared with 12.79 Mnt in Jan’16. As per data collected from Korean customs.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
South Korea mainly imports Non-coking coal, Coking coal, Anthracite, Pet coke and Met coke.Non-Coking coal accounts for 70% of the total monthly coal imports.

During Jan’17, the country imported 10.07 MnT Non-coking coal, 2.16 MnT Coking coal, 0.58 MnT anthracite and about 0.87 MnT other grades of coal.

Quantities in MnT 

Major Exporting Countries:
Indonesia supplied major quantities of coal exports to South Korea followed by Australia, Russia, Canada and Colombia.Top three coal exporting countries (Indonesia, Australia and Russia) supplied 70% of the total coal exports to Korea in Jan’17.

Indonesia exported 3.98 MnT coal in Jan’17.Coal exports were increased by 5% M-o-M and 13% Y-o-Y.

Australia second-largest coal exporter supplied 3.60 MnT in Jan’17. Country’s exports were down both on the monthly and yearly basis.

Russia, third-largest coal exporter, supplied 2.12 MnT coal. Exports were down by 10% M-o-M compared with 2.35 MnT in Dec’16.While exports increased by 10% Y-o-Y against 1.93 MnT in Jan’16.
