Russia Coal Exports Sharply Decline in Jan’17

Russia, third-largest coal exporter in the world, witness decline in their monthly exports by 49% to 9.85 MnT in Jan’17 compared with 19.21 MnT in Dec’16, as per data released by Russian customs.

However, Exports have risen by 33% Y-o-Y compared with 7.42 MnT in Jan’16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Russia mainly exports Bituminous coal, which accounts for more than 70% of the total coal exported from the country. However, bituminous coal exports fell by 49% M-o-M to 7.52 MnT in Jan’17.

Other coal commodities include Coking coal, Coke, Anthracite and Pet Coke. Exports of all these coal grades have fallen over the month.

Major Importing countries:
South Korea emerged as the top coal importer to Russia in Jan’17 followed by China, Japan, Turkey, Germany and Ukraine.

Imports from major countries have followed a similar trend in Jan’17, with imports falling from the previous month while yearly imports have been increasing compared with Jan’16.

South Korea received 1.59 MnT coal in Jan’17, down by 54% M-o-M compared with 3.47 MnT in Dec’16. However, yearly imports rose by 19% compared with 1.34 MnT in Jan’16.

China, the second-largest importer, saw imports falling by 45% M-o-M while that increasing by 28% Y-o-Y to 0.95 MnT in Jan’17.

Likewise, Japan recorded downfall in imports by 56% M-o-M to 0.95 MnT in Jan’17. However, their yearly coal imports increased by 13% compared with 0.84 MnT in Jan’16.
