India: SECL to expedite coal production from Gevra Project

South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) has planned to augment coal production from Gevra Project after receiving green nod for capacity expansion.

Environmental Clearance for the project was granted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in order to increase annual production from present level of 45 mn t to 49 mn t which would be carried out in the mining lease area of 4148.486 hectares.

SECL board has already sanctioned a sum of INR 11816.4 Crore for the development plan.

Significance of Gevra Project:

Gevra mine located in Chhattisgarh is one of the largest open cast mines in the country, which employs modern state of art technology in the form of surface Miners, Shovels and Dumpers for coal extraction.

The project caters coal requirement of country’s largest power producer-NTPC along with nearby end-user industries by means of linkages and other mode of coal sales.

At present the total mineable reserve of the mine is estimated at 400.246 mn t, of which 100% is available for extraction that can be carried out for a period of 9 years.

The expansion plan would boost coal production of SECL which accounts for highest share in CIL’s total coal output. In the previous fiscal, SECL produced 150.6 mn t of coal and had ranked top amongst CIL subsidiaries.
