India: Petro products consumption rises 4%, y-o-y, in Apr’21-Feb’22

India’s total consumption of petroleum products during Apr’21-Feb’22 stood at 183.3 million tonnes (mnt) as against 175.7 mnt in the same period last year, recording a y-o-y rise of 4%.

According to the latest figures available for Feb, consumption stood at 17.6 mnt, rising moderately by 5% on a y-o-y basis.

The total consumption of all petroleum products in the country include domestic sales by all oil companies and all the imported products. These products are used in various applications in different sectors like railways, steel, coal, power, cement, etc.

Notably, HSD (high speed diesel), MS (motor spirit), LPG (liquified petroleum gas), naphtha and petcoke contribute to 81% of total petroleum products consumption.

High speed diesel is used mainly as a transportation fuel in rail or road transportation. Motor spirit, on the other hand, is used in private vehicles and two-wheelers, while LPG is majorly used for cooking and in specific industrial applications.

The percentage share of pet coke recorded a drop of 11% during Apr’21-Feb’22 amid continuous price rise in both the international and domestic markets. However, its usage during Feb recorded a sharp increase of 77% on y-o-y basis among the cement manufacturers due to the fact that it was relatively cheaper than thermal coal.

Pet coke is used mainly by the cement industry, lime kilns, steel and aluminum industries, calcium carbide and for gasification.
