Met Coke imports in India were in a sliding mode as prices in the key international markets sky-rocketed mainly on account of significantly higher prices of the prime ingredient—Coking Coal.
In Aug’17, Met Coke imports in India declined by 30.8% over the imports in July’17, an analysis of the import data compiled by CoalMint Research shows. During the fifth month of the current fiscal, around 0.27 MnT of Met Coke was imported in the country against that of around 0.39 MnT in the preceding month.
On a year-on-year comparison, the imports in Aug’17 also were lower by 48.1% in comparison with the imports of around 0.52 MnT in the same month of the last fiscal.
Due to the prevalence of high prices in foreign markets, steel makers in India preferred to purchase the material from the home markets. Also, demand for Met Coke normally moderates during the monsoon season.
