India: Egyptian onion imports put pressure on Maharashtra prices

  • Egyptian onions enter Mumbai APMC at INR 38-40/kg, below local prices of INR 45-50/kg
  • Further imports could increase competition for Maharashtra onions, pressure wholesale prices

Egyptian onions have entered the Mumbai Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), creating a price gap with locally sourced onions and raising concerns among Maharashtra farmer organisations. According to news reports, two containers carrying around 60 tonnes (t) of Egyptian onions reached the Mumbai APMC onion-potato market, with imported produce priced below domestic supplies.

Imported onions gain price advantage in Mumbai

Local onions were trading at around INR 45-50/kg in the wholesale market, depending on quality, while Egyptian onions were available at INR 38-40/kg. This gives imported onions a price advantage of up to INR 12/kg and could make them attractive to commercial buyers.

Mumbai APMC received around 19,950 bags of onions from Maharashtra on Wednesday. The arrival of lower-priced imported supplies adds another source of availability to a market already receiving substantial volumes from domestic producing regions.

Larger imports could affect local demand

According to news reports, traders expect around 400 containers of Egyptian onions to arrive in the coming period. If the expected imports materialise, the additional supply could increase competition with Maharashtra onions and influence buying patterns in the wholesale market.

Imported onions are reportedly finding significant demand from hotels and commercial establishments in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Traders cited in news reports estimated that these buyers account for around 80% of purchases of the imported onions, suggesting that the immediate impact is concentrated in the institutional segment.

Maharashtra farmers watch price impact

The development comes as Maharashtra growers face higher production costs and weather-related challenges. Current domestic prices have provided relatively better realisation, but increased availability of cheaper imported onions could put pressure on local prices if buyers shift toward imported supplies.

Outlook

The scale and pace of further Egyptian onion arrivals will determine their impact on Mumbai’s wholesale market. A sustained flow of competitively priced imports could increase competition for domestic onions, while limited arrivals may restrict the effect on Maharashtra prices. Local arrivals, import volumes and buyer preference will remain key factors to monitor.
