China: Anode coke import prices in Jul’22 drop due to increased domestic production

Imported anode grade coke prices in China showed a downward correction of $60-80/t m-o-m in July 2022 after rising in the past few months. Anode grade coke is mainly used for manufacturing calcinated petroleum coke (CPC) and utilised in aluminum and steel sectors. The anode grade coke is also termed as green petroleum coke (GPC) in the international market and raw petroleum coke (RPC) in the Indian context.

The overall availability of anode grade coke has gradually increased in China as compared to the previous months due increased domestic productions. In addition, the reduction in aluminum prices on the London Metal Exchange has also contributed to anode grade coke’s price corrections.

The price for South America’s mid-sulphur (3-4%) anode coke in July was in the range of 190-200/t, FOB, down by $50-60/t against June. The price of 2% sulphur anode coke stood at $240-250/t, a drop of $70-80/t.

However, demand for low-sulphur grade anode coke from China’s battery market remains firm. The low-sulphur (less than 1%) grade anode coke is imported by China from South America and the price of the same was assessed in the range of $850-860/t CFR at the start of July. However, the same reduced to below $800/t as freight rates decreased towards the end of the month.

With respect to India, Goa Carbo – the country’s leading calcined pet coke producers -purchased a small cargo of 6,000 t of anode coke from Malaysia at $365/t CFR basis while two supramax cargoes from Oman were bought in by two calciners at Kolkata at $339/t CFR east coast.

Major refinery Indian Oil Corporation increased RPC prices from 14 July by a total of INR 8,770/t ($110-111/t) ex-refinery basis. The price now ranges from INR 71,450/t – 66,980/t, depending upon the quality.
