Vale’s iron ore blending project to benefit Chinese steelmakers

Leading global iron ore miner Vale has announced that construction of the Zhongzhai Concentrate Mixing Project, in cooperation with the Jiangsu Shagang Group and Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co. Ltd, has already commenced.

The project will be constructed by Ningbo Zhoushan Port and is expected to be put into operation in the second half of 2023. The project involves construction of a silo concentrate blending facility at the Zhongzhai Ore Terminal in China to blend up to eight different iron ore products, with an annual production capacity of 15 million tonnes (mnt).

Shagang will be the the exclusive user of the concentrate and mixed ore products after the project starts operations. Furthermore, Vale has committed to providing high-quality iron ore products such as Brazilian blend fines (BRBF) as raw materials for the project as well as technical support for the concentrate mixing operation.

This operation is performed in the steel mill prior to sintering. Concentrate blending allows Vale to expand its supply chain services, bringing multiple benefits to customers such as improved blending quality, enhanced logistics efficiency, and reduced steel mill raw material inventories.
