USA plans to retire 12.6 GW of coal-fired capacity in 2022

The US energy ministry will retire 12.6 GW of coal, which is higher by 4.6 GW compared to last year. The cheaper gas prices from shale production and increased use of renewable sources of power generation have made coal-fired generators less efficient and uneconomic. About 14.9 GW of electric-generating capacity will retire in 2022, which include 85% of coal-fired power plants.
