Coal exports from the United States have risen 31% Y-o-Y to 10.06 MnT in Apr’17 compared with 7.69 MnT coal in Apr’16. However, exports were down by 12% M-o-M compared with 11.37 MnT in Mar’17.
Coal exports in Apr’17 fell short of the Mar’17 totals but were boosted on the year-on-year basis by stronger seaborne prices for both metallurgical and thermal coal that helped push up US coal exports.
During the first four months of the year 2017(Jan’17-Apr’17), USA has exported 40.79 MnT coal against 29.83 MnT coal exported during corresponding months of the previous year, thus recording an increase of 37% over the year, according to the data provided by US customs.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
USA majorly exports Coking Coal, Pet Coke and Non-coking coal along with small quantities of Met Coke, Anthracite and other grades of coal.
During May’17, exports of coking coal increased by 13% M-o-M to 4.18 MnT. whereas exports of both Pet Coke and Bituminous coal fell over the month.

Major Coal Importing Countries:
Japan overtook India to become the largest coal importer from the USA in Apr’17.
Japanese coal imports increased 137% M-o-M to 1.4 MnT in Apr’17. Imports also rose 133% Y-o-Y compared with 0.6 MnT in Apr’16.
India, second-largest coal importer, received 1.31 MnT in Apr’17. Coal imports were down by 28% Y-o-Y compared with 1.83 MnT in Apr’16.
Brazil, the third-largest coal importer in Apr’17, recorded a growth in monthly coal imports. The country imported 0.87 MnT coal during the month against 0.84 MnT in Mar’17. Coal imports also increased by 16% Y-o-Y compared with 0.75 MnT in Apr’16.
