USA Coal Exports Decline in Jan’17

USA coal exports have fallen by 4% M-o-M to 9.81 MnT in Jan’17 in comparison with 10.24 MnT in Dec’16, as per data collected from US customs.

The monthly exports have declined in Jan’17, yet it was much higher compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Coal exports have significantly raised by 35% Y-o-Y compared with 7.25 MnT in Jan’16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
USA majorly exports Metallurgical bituminous, Bituminous and Pet Coke. These three coal commodities account for more than 95% of the total monthly coal exports.

Rest of the commodity includes small amount of Anthracite, Coke, Residues of Petroleum Oils and other grades of coal.

During Jan’17, Exports of Metallurgical bituminous and bituminous coal both have fallen by 7% M-o-M, while that of Pet coke and coke have slightly increased over the month.

Major Importing Countries:
India has overtaken Netherlands as the major coal importers from the USA in Jan’17.India imported 0.93 MnT coal in the month, however their monthly imports has decreased by 20% M-o-M compared with 1.16 MnT in Dec’16.

Netherlands, second-largest coal importers, received 0.91 MnT coal in Jan’17, imports drop 31% M-o-M from 1.33 MnT in Dec’16.

Japan, third-largest coal importers, recorded fall in imports by 7% M-o-M to 0.89 MnT in Jan’17, while yearly imports have rose by 70% compared with 0.52 MnT in Jan’16.

China’s import’s from USA has improved by 196% M-o-M and 101% Y-o-Y.
