US coal production likely to drop nearly 3%, m-o-m, in third week of Dec’21

According to data released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) on December 23, in the third week of December (the week ending December 18), the estimated coal production in the country was 11.2189 mn t, compared with the previous week. A decrease of 2.61% m-o-m, a slight increase of 0.74% over the same period last year, and a record low in the past three weeks.

Data show that during the week, the estimated coal production in Wyoming and Montana was 5.09 mn t, a slight decrease of 0.59% w-o-w and a decrease of 1.21% from the same period last year.

In the third week of December, coal production in Illinois was estimated at 772,500 t, a decrease of 10.5% from the previous week and an increase of 15.86% from the same period last year. Appalachian coal production is estimated at 3.12 mn t, a decrease of 3.54% from the previous week and an increase of 5.87% from the same period last year.

In the first 51 weeks of 2021, US coal production is estimated to total 559 mn t, an increase of 7.8% from the 519 million short tons in the same period last year.

That week, US rail coal transportation volume was 65.021 mn t, a 2.6% w-o-w decrease from 66.76 mn t in the previous week, and an increase of 4.69% y-o-y from 62.11 mn t in the same period last year.
