As per recently released customs data, United States imported 0.33 MnT ferrous scrap in Jan’18. Ferrous scrap imports remained stable on monthly basis in Jan’18 as against imports in Dec’17. United States imported 0.33 MnT ferrous scrap in Dec’17.
On yearly premises, scrap imports climbed marginally up by 3% Y-o-Y against 0.32 MnT ferrous scrap imports recorded in Jan’17.
In 2017, United States ferrous scrap imports recorded highest since 2006. United States imported 4.36 MnT ferrous scrap in CY17 and registered 21% Y-o-Y growth as against 3.60 MnT ferrous scrap imports recorded during the last year. As per data available with SteelMint, United States crossed 4 MnT mark for scrap imports for the first time since 2010.
In CY17, United States remained world’s fourth-largest importer of ferrous scrap after Turkey (20.94 MnT), South Korea (5.90 MnT) and India (4.57 MnT). Top unloading ports in United States for scrap import activities were Detroit, Seattle, Buffalo, New Orleans and Charleston.
Also, USA finish steel and imported scrap prices remained high in Jan’18. Stable scrap imports would be the result of increased scrap availability in heating winter in Jan’18 despite the hike in steel and scrap prices.
United States witnessed increased EAF crude steel output in Jan’18 – According to the data released by World Steel Association, crude steel production in United States stood at 6.822 MnT in Jan’18 compared to 6.732 MnT in Dec’17, which is up by 1.33% M-o-M.

Canada remained largest supplier of ferrous scrap to United States –
In Jan’18, Canada supplied highest 0.23 MnT ferrous scrap to United States occupying almost 70% share in USA ferrous scrap imports in Jan’18. Followed by United Kingdom and Mexico and Sweden which supplied 0.04 MnT, 0.03 MnT and 0.03 MnT ferrous scrap respectively. United Kingdom witnessed 50% M-o-M fall while Canada and Mexico witnessed stable scrap imports M-o-M in Jan’18 as against imports in Dec’17.
In Jan’18, USA pig iron imports increased 58% M-o-M to 0.49 MnT as against 0.31 MnT in Dec’17.
