As per SteelMint’s analysis, iron ore movement across major producing states of the country recorded decline by 14% M-o-M in Feb’18 to 10.57 MnT as against 12.24 MnT in Jan’18. The figures are compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka and Goa e-auction data and import data as per customs. The figures indicated do not include the captive iron ore movement of SAIL & Tata Steel and movement for exports.
State-wise iron ore movement analysis:
Iron ore dispatches from Odisha declined in Feb’18 –
Iron ore dispatches from Odisha have witnessed a decline of 9% M-o-M in Feb’18 to 5.08 MnT as compared to 5.57 MnT in Jan’18. Rungta Mines recorded highest dispatch in Feb’18 at 1.86 MnT, down 11% M-o-M as against 2.10 MnT in Jan’18, followed by KJS Ahluwalia at 0.61 MnT(up 20% M-o-M) and OMC at 0.53 MnT (down 22% M-o-M). The decline in dispatches so observed was due to illegal mining case in Odisha which curtailed production at numerous leading mines.
C.G. based units iron ore procurement from NMDC decreased to 40 rakes in Feb’18:
India’s largest iron ore miner, NMDC supplied 368 rakes of iron ore from Bailadila mines, Chhattisgarh in Feb’18, decline of 11% as against supply of 413 rakes in Jan’18. Out of 368 rakes supplied, 40 rakes were moved to state based units which were down 35 % M-o-M against 62 rakes in Jan’18. A total of 274 rakes was supplied to outside CG based units (down 7% M-o-M) and 54 rakes were loaded for export (down 5%).
Karnataka iron ore e-auction sales depicted marginal decline in Feb’18 –
Karnataka has registered decline in iron ore sales via e-auctions in Feb’18. The state witnessed decrease of 7% M-o-M in iron ore sales reaching 1.92 MnT as against 2.06 MnT in Jan’18. NMDC sold 0.83 MnT in Feb’18, down 10% as against 0.92 MnT in Jan’18 via e-auctions. NMDC had rollover iron ore prices for Feb’18 deliveries. JSW Steel continued to be the largest buyer at 1.32 MnT, followed by BMM Ispat at 0.11 MnT.
Indian iron ore & pellet imports decreased by 42% in Feb’18–
Indian iron ore & pellet imports decreased 1.14 MnT, down 42% as against 1.95 MnT in Jan’18. Out of the total imports of 1.14 MnT, 1.07 MnT was iron ore, and 0.07 MnT stood pellets.
JSW was the largest iron ore importer at 0.58 MnT. Out of 0.58 MnT iron ore imported by JSW Steel in Feb’18, 0.19 MnT iron ore was imported at Jaigarh port and 0.38 MnT iron ore imported at Krishnapatnam. Essar Steel stood second largest importer at 0.18 MnT, Varsana Ispat at 0.15 MnT and Kamachi & Pulkit at 0.09 MnT.
Essar Steel imported 72,800 MT pellets from Bahrain in Feb’18.
Indian iron ore exports hit ten months high in Feb’18 –
Indian iron ore exports have increased by 75% to 2.06 MnT in Feb18 against 1.18 MnT in Jan’18. Significant increase in iron ore export volumes from Goa’s Mormugao port was noticed in Feb’18, due to SC’s order to stop the mining operations post 15th Mar’18. Vedanta, remained the largest iron ore exporter at 0.54 MnT in Feb’18, up 35% against 0.40 MnT in Jan’18, followed by Fomento Resources at 0.29 MnT and Rungta at 0.29 MnT. Exports from Rungta Mines increased to more than twice in Feb’18 as against 0.12 MnT in Jan’18. MMTC (which exports on behalf of NMDC) recorded at 0.22 MnT , VM Salgaonkar at 0.17 MnT (up 93% M-o-M), Panduronga Timblo at 0.17 (up more than twice M-o-M).
Indian pellet exports have registered a fall of 9% M-o-M to 0.58 MnT in Feb’18 as against 0.64 MnT in Jan’18.. BRPL stood the largest exporter for Feb’18 with exports at 0.17 MnT, accounting for 29% share in total pellet exports from India. KIOCL and Essar steel recorded the 2nd largest exporter at 0.11 MnT each, followed by Rashmi Metaliks at 0.06 MnT, JSPL at 0.05 MnT and Bagadiya Brothers at 0.05 MnT. The export was lower due to limited buying interest from Chinese steel mills as mills preferred pellets made out of imported concentrate and also due to limited material availability in domestic market.
