United States: Ferrous Scrap Exports Down 8% in Nov’18

United States – world’s second largest exporter of ferrous scrap after EU-28 has witnessed a marginal fall in scrap exports in Nov’18. As per recent customs data, United States exported 1,414,038 MT ferrous scrap in Nov’18, down 8% M-o-M as against 1,536,343 MT exports recorded in Oct’18. Despite Turkey observed a rise, imports from rest all major buyers dropped in Nov’18.

On yearly premises, exports decreased by 11% Y-o-Y in Nov’18 as against 1,588,742 MT in Nov’17. Notably, exports in Nov’17 was recorded highest in CY17.

Domestic scrap consumption remained strong in Nov’18. Also, a marginal increase in scrap prices could have resulted in limiting scrap exports in Nov’18. The average export price of US HMS 1&2 was recorded at USD 336/MT, CFR Turkey against an average USD 330/MT, CFR in Oct’18.

Portwise – Top loading ports in US for scrap shipping activities in Nov’18 were New York City (0.20 MnT), Los Angeles (0.19 MnT), Boston (0.10 MnT), San Francisco (0.09 MnT), , Philadelphia (0.08 MnT), Seattle (0.06 MnT) and Columbia-snake (0.05 MnT).

Turkey remained the largest importer in Nov’18 – Turkey imported 306,902 MT ferrous scrap in Nov’18, up 33% M-o-M as against 230,484 MT in Oct’18. Turkey occupied the highest 22% share in total scrap imports.

Notably, China observed a sharp jump in scrap imports from the US witnessing 201,048 MT in Nov’18, up multifold against 8,821 MT in Oct’18.

Followed by other prominent importers like Taiwan (151,493 MT, -18% M-o-M), Canada (146,486 MT, -10% M-o-M), Mexico (109,802 MT, -16% M-o-M) occupying 11%, 10% and 8% share. Other majpr importers were South Korea (99,357 MT, -31% M-o-M), Bangladesh (62,363 MT, -38% M-o-M) Vietnam (57,052 MT, -64% M-o-M) and India (50,130 MT, -12% M-o-M) .

US scrap exports up 15% during Jan-Nov’18 – United States exported 15.34 MnT ferrous scrap during Jan-Nov’18, up 15% Y-o-Y as against 13.36 MnT during the same period last year. Almost all major importers except Turkey and China observed a considerable rise in scrap imports from US. Increasing imports from Asian countries on rising EAF crude steel production for higher quality steel manufacturing could have resulted in increased US exports in 2018.
