Turkey’s coal import has achieved the highest monthly total for CY17 in Aug, as per the customs data.
Coal Imports have increased 6% M-o-M to 4.26 MnT in Aug’17 to reach the 9-month high value since Nov’16. Imports were also 42% higher on the year, in comparison with import of 2.99 MnT coal recorded during Aug’16.
Imports have been rising for the past two months. As a result, the total imports in CY17 (till Aug) has reached 27.32 MnT, with an increase of 4% Y-o-Y compared with 26.32 MnT coal imported during Jan’16-Aug’16.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Non-coking coal imports increased 21% M-o-M to 3.43 MnT in Aug’17, which had accounted for 80% of the total imports. While, Coking coal imports reduced nearly half of its value from the previous month to 0.32 MnT during the month.
Of the other major grades, Imports of Pet coke and Met coke fell during the month, while import of Anthracite coal rose 50% M-o-M to 0.12 MnT.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Colombia remained the major coal exporter to Turkey, followed by Russia, South Korea and the US. These 4 countries had together supplied more than 90% of the total coal to Turkey during the month.
Colombian coal exports had witnessed a minor growth of 3% on the month to 1.78 MnT in Aug’17, but were 78% higher on the year compared with 1 MnT in Aug’16.
Russian exports also recorded growth both on the monthly and yearly basis to 1.48 MnT in Aug’17.
South Korea jumped three places up to become the third-largest coal exporter in Aug’17. Monthly export from the country rose nearly six fold to 0.38 MnT, besides increasing 280% on the year compared with 0.1 MnT in Aug’16.
