Thailand: Ferrous Scrap Imports Nearly Doubled in Q3 CY17

Thailand-one of the emerging market in terms of steel industry in Southeast Asia has witnessed a sharp increase in its quarterly ferrous scrap imports in Q3 CY17. In Q3-CY17 imports were 0.42 MnT, up 110% on Q-o-Q basis against 0.20 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Q3-CY16 and up 45% against 0.29 MnT imports in Q2-CY17.

However, there was fall in ferrous scrap imports by 41% M-o-M in Sept’17 against imports in Aug’17. As per recently released customs data, Thailand imported 0.13 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’17 against 0.22 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Aug’17.Thailand had imported highest ferrous scrap in Aug’17 on monthly basis so far in CY17.

On yearly premises, ferrous scrap imports to Thailand surged mammoth by 1200% Y-o-Y in Sept’17 as imports were 0.01 MnT in Sept’16. The imports were marked as the lowest in Sept’16 during CY16, therefore in Sept’17 imports have hiked by thirteen folds against in Sept’16.

During first nine months of CY17, Thailand imported 1.02 MnT ferrous scrap, up 42% against 0.72 MnT ferrous scrap imports during Jan-Sept’16.

China emerged as the largest supplier of ferrous scrap to Thailand in Sep’17-

In Sept’17, China exported highest 0.05 MnT ferrous scrap to Thailand followed by Australia, South Korea, Panama and Myanmar exported 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap each.

During Jan-Sept’17, United States exported highest 0.34 MnT ferrous scrap occupying 33% share of total ferrous scrap imports in Thailand followed by the second largest exporter as China with 0.10 MnT ferrous scrap exports. Other major exporters of ferrous scrap to Thailand were Australia (0.08 MnT), Philippines (0.06 MnT) and South Korea (0.04 MnT) respectively.

United States though being a largest exporter to Thailand during Jan-Sept’17, remained silent with nil ferrous scrap exports in Sept’17.
