Taiwan: Stainless steel mills set to gain from AD investigation into cold-rolled imports from Vietnam

  • Cold-rolled imports from Vietnam surge manifold over 2022-24
  • Taiwanese mills allege cheap imports causing unfair competition

Taiwan’s leading stainless steel producers — Yieh United Steel Corp. (Yusco), Tang Eng Iron Works, and Walsin Lihwa —  are expected to benefit from a pending anti-dumping (AD) investigation into cold-rolled stainless steel imports from Vietnam. The formal documentation will be submitted to Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance shortly after the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Cold-rolled stainless steel imports from Vietnam have surged sharply, rising from just 400 t in 2022 to more than 30,000 t in 2024. These imports are priced significantly lower than domestic products, raising concerns among Taiwanese producers about unfair competition and market disruption.

Domestic stainless steel mills have accused Vietnamese exporters of dumping excess capacity into Taiwan’s market. Industry participants believe the AD investigation could help restore balance and improve competitiveness for local manufacturers, following similar actions already taken by South Korea against Vietnamese stainless products.
