As per recent customs data, Taiwan one of the world’s major scrap importer has witnessed fall in its scrap imports by 22% M-o-M in Sept’17 against Imports in Aug’17.Taiwan imported 0.21 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’17 while the imports were 0.27 MnT in Aug’17.
Taiwan registered a decline of 9% Y-o-Y in its ferrous scrap imports in Sept’17 against that of 0.23 MnT imports in Sept’16.
Ferrous scrap imports in the country remained unchanged on Q-o-Q premises in Q3 CY17 against Q2 CY17.During both quarters Q2 (Apr-Jun) and Q3 (Jul-Sept) in CY17, ferrous scrap imports were 0.78 MnT respectively. However, marginal growth of 3% Y-o-Y witnessed in ferrous scrap imports during Q3 CY17 against 0.76 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Q3 CY16.
During first nine month’s period of CY17, ferrous scrap imports to Taiwan summed up at 2.17 MnT which has shown marginal fall by 6% Y-o-Y against the 2.30 MnT imports during the same period of CY16.
United States remained the largest ferrous scrap supplier to Taiwan –
United States remained the largest exporter of ferrous scrap to Taiwan again in Sept’17.United States exported 0.08 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’17 with 11% fall M-o-M against 0.09 MnT exports in Aug’17.
In Sept17, China ascended to the rank of second largest exporter and supplied 0.05 MnT ferrous scrap to Taiwan However, Japan exported 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap with 67% drop against 0.03 MnT ferrous scrap exports in Aug’17.
Other major scrap exporters to Taiwan were Australia, Dominican Republic, Hong Kong and Canada with 0.01MnT exports each in Sept’17.
During first nine months in CY17, United States exported highest 0.92 MnT ferrous scrap to Taiwan followed by Japan (0.34 MnT), China (0.27 MnT) and Australia (0.10 MnT).China hiked ferrous scrap exports to Taiwan by about fourteen times while Japan almost halved it against the exports in the same time frame of last year.
Imported ferrous scrap prices to Taiwan remained high in Sep’17 –
The fall in imports could be attributed to hike in imports prices in August and September months against prices in Jul’17.Monthly average prices for HMS (80:20) were USD 287/MT and USD 292/MT, CNF Taiwan in Aug’17 and Sept’17 respectively. While average prices in Jul’17 were at USD 261/MT, CNF Taiwan.
