Sweden: Ferrous Scrap Exports Fall 15% in H1 2018

Falling imports from major importers like Turkey, United States and Germany as compared to last year could have resulted in fall in Sweden scrap exports in H1 CY18.

Sweden – one of the major scrap exporters among EU-28 has witnessed a considerable fall by 15% Y-o-Y in its scrap exports in H1’18. As per recent customs data, Sweden exported 583,155 MT ferrous scrap in H1’18 as against 684,074 MT exports recorded in H1’17.

On quarterly basis, the country witnessed rise of 5% Q-o-Q to 299,189 MT ferrous scrap exports in Q2’18 as against 283,966 MT exports in Q1’18.

During H1’18, fall in scrap imports from major importers like Turkey, USA and Germany and high global scrap prices compared to last year could have resulted in fall in Sweden scrap exports. On the other hand, Norway, Denmark and Pakistan witnessed growth in imports from Sweden this year amid improving demand.

Turkey stepped up as the largest scrap importer from Sweden during H1’18 – Turkey imported highest 127,461 MT ferrous scrap surpassing United States which has imported 93,257 MT in H1 2018. These two importers occupied 22% and 16% share each of total scrap exports from Sweden during first half CY18. Followed by other prominent importers like Norway, Pakistan, Denmark and Germany occupying 14%, 9%, 7% and 6% share.

Ferrous scrap exports from Sweden rose 8% in Jun’18 – The country exported 97,248 MT ferrous scrap in Jun’18 as against 90,107 MT ferrous scrap exports during May’18 witnessing rise of 8% M-o-M.

Turkey remained largest importer of scrap from Sweden in Jun’18 – Turkey imported highest 34,476 MT ferrous scrap occupying 35% share in total scrap exports from Sweden. Turkey resumed buying activities in June from Sweden after witnessing nil volumes in May’18 on less economic stability.

USA imported nil scrap volumes from Sweden in Jun’18 – USA turned absolutely silent for Swedish scrap amid less clarity on tariff regulations which had imported highest 30,170 MT scrap from Sweden in May’18.

Followed by other prominent importers like Pakistan (11,130 MT, +34% M-o-M) and Norway (13,909 MT, +11% M-o-M) have witnessed considerable rise in scrap imports from Sweden While scrap exports fell to Germany (5,310 MT, -53% M-o-M) and Denmark (6,812 MT, -10% M-o-M) in Jun’18.

According to World Steel Association, Sweden’s crude steel production stood stable on yearly basis which was recorded at 2.77 MnT during Jan-Jul’18.
