- Capesize rallies further on robust iron ore demand
- Panamax strengthens; Supramax remains rangebound
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) rose 3.3% (93 points) d-o-d to 2,936 on 4 August from 2,843 on 3 August, reaching a three-week high and extending gains for a fourth consecutive session. The rally was primarily driven by stronger Capesize earnings amid sustained iron ore export demand from Australia and Brazil, while steady coal and grain cargo movements continued to support the Panamax segment.
Meanwhile, the Supramax market remained broadly stable as limited minor bulk demand and sufficient vessel availability continued to cap freight rate growth.
Segment-wise performance
- Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): Surged 4.7% (214 points) d-o-d to 4,778 on 4 August from 4,564 on 3 August, supported by firm iron ore cargo volumes from Australia and Brazil, healthy miner-led fixing activity, and improved vessel utilisation.
- Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): Rose 2.4% (52 points) d-o-d to 2,187 on 4 August from 2,135 on 3 August, aided by steady coal and grain cargo demand across both the Atlantic and Pacific basins, resulting in improved chartering activity.
- Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): Inched up 0.2% (3 points) d-o-d to 1,613 on 4 August from 1,610 on 3 August, as weak minor bulk cargo demand and ample vessel supply continued to limit meaningful rate gains.
Outlook
The BDI is expected to remain supported in the near term, backed by firm iron ore exports from Australia and Brazil and steady coal and grain trade sustaining Panamax earnings. However, muted demand for minor bulk cargoes and adequate Supramax vessel availability are likely to keep gains in the smaller vessel segment limited.
