State-wise Iron Ore Movement in H1 2015

Merchant iron ore movement within states in H1 2015 (Jan-June) was recorded as 36 MnT. Analysis has been done on the basis of data compiled from railway movement, truck movement and Karnataka e-auction data. Analysis does not include movement from captive mines like Tata, SAIL, JSPL and Usha Martin. 

Odisha

Odisha, India’s major iron ore producing state had dispatched 16 MnT iron ore in the first half of 2015. Dispatches within state contributed to 56% of total dispatches from Odisha; stood at 8.9 MnT. Bhushan Steel & Bhushan Power contributed 37%, ie around 3.3 MnT of the total dispatches within state.

Dispatches to other states, mainly to Chhattisgarh, remained at 3.8 MnT which was majorly procured by C.G. based sponge plants. Dispatches to West Bengal and Jharkhand remained at 0.7 MnT each and to other states stood at 1.6 MnT.

Karnataka

Dispatches from Karnataka remained at 11 MnT. Almost 90% of the total material was dispatched to Karnataka itself. At present, 23 private sector mines and 2 public sector mines of NMDC are major producers of iron ore. JSW Steel remains as the largest buyer of iron ore from Karnataka iron ore e-auction.

Chhattisgarh

Dispatches from Chhattisgarh state remained at 8 MnT. Out of which, the major dispatches moved to Andhra Pradesh (around 4.8 MnT). Out of the total dispatches to Andhra Pradesh, 65-70% was done to Vizag Steel and around 25-30% done to ESSAR Steel.

Movement of iron ore within state was 2.5 MnT, 0.3 MnT to other states and 0.2 MnT to Jharkhand and Maharashtra each.

Jharkhand

1.1 MnT iron ore was dispatched from Jharkhand in H1 2015. Out of the total, 0.6 MnT was majorly done to West Bengal. Major buyer in West Bengal was Shyam SAL which contributed 30% of the total share to West Bengal. Dispatches within and to other states remained at 0.4 MnT and 0.1 MnT respectively.
