Steel giant POSCO has recently started the development of HyREX technology, which is a unique hydrogen reduction iron and steel technology for a carbon-neutral era.
“The development of hydrogen-reduced steel technology and conversion to a low-carbon, eco-friendly steel manufacturing process are essential for our survival,” said POSCO’s Vice Chairman Kim Hak Dong in its 57th founding anniversary.
What is POSCO’s HyREX technology?
HyREX is an innovative hydrogen reduction ironmaking technology which produces molten iron using powdered iron ore and hydrogen, based on POSCO’s FINEX fluidised reduction reactor technology.
The reduction and melting reaction take place separately in the reduction furnace and electric furnace. About 25% of hydrogen generated during combustion of coal is used to reduce iron ore in POSCO’s FINEX technology. POSCO is currently working with the government and domestic steelmakers to develop HyREX technology.
However, steelmakers in nations like Europe, USA and China are supporting technological development on shaft furnace. HyREX technology was introduced by POSCO in HyIS 2021 in October. POSCO aims to strengthen its leadership in future global steel technology that will become carbon neutral and lead the era of green steel.
