South African Coal Exports Drop 3% In CY16

South African coal exports have witnessed a drop of 3% to 76.87 MnT in CY16.However, Exports have risen by1% Y-o-Y in Dec’16.

South Africa, one of the major coal suppliers, saw a decline in the yearly exports from 78.93 MnT in 2015 to 76.87 MnT in CY16. Coal exports have increased by 1% Y-o-Y in Dec’16 compared with 7.15 MnT in Dec’15. As per data collected from South African Customs.

Grade-Wise Exports in 2016:
South Africa has majorly supplied bituminous coal in 2016. Bituminous coal account for 90% of the total coal exports in2016. Other Coal grades include Anthracite, Coke and semi-coke, Pet coke and others.

Bituminous coal exports have fallen by 4% in CY16 to 72.93 MnT compared with 76.36 MnT in 2015.

It may be noted that all above-mentioned coal grades export have dropped in 2016, apart from other grade coal which has increased by more than 1.68 MnT to 2.54 Mnt in CY16 compared with 0.68 MnT in 2015.

Other grade of coal includes Briquettes, Ovoids and Similar Solid Fuels Manufactured from Coal and that obtained from Other Residues of Petroleum Oils or of Oils Obtained from Bituminous Minerals.

Coal Exports in 2016:
South Africa’s domestic energy resources are dominated by coal.Internationally, coal is the most widely used primary fuel, accounting for about 36% of the total fuel consumption of world’s electricity production. About 77% of South Africa’s primary energy is provided by coal.

In addition to extensive domestic use, about 28% of total coal production is exported, mainly by Richards Bay coal terminal. However, coal exports from Richard Bay have fallen in 2016 and so the yearly exports have declined to owe to higher South African coal index prices.

Coal Exports also declined by 8% M-o-M to 7.18 MnT in Dec’16 compared with 7.83 MnT in Nov’16.

Major Coal Importing Countries in CY16:
India remains the top coal importer from South Africa, as its whole domestic sponge iron plants are dependent on South African coal. Coal imports have increased by 5% to 37.56 MnT in CY16 compared with 35.86MnT in 2015.

Other major importing nations include Pakistan, Italy, Morocco, Turkey and Netherlands.
