South Africa, world’s 3rd largest iron ore exporter after Australia and Brazil has exported 31.72 MnT iron ore in H1 CY17, according to the trade data released by South African Customs. Iron ore exports have increased by 3% Y-o-Y as it was 30.78 MnT in H1 CY16.
South African iron ore exports have decreased by 19% M-o-M in the month Jun’17 to 4.82 MnT against 5.95 MnT in May’17.
In Jun’17, the agglomerated (pellets/concentrate) iron ore exports were at 2.68 MnT, down 28% M-o-M as it were 3.71 MnT in May’17. Similarly the non-agglomerated (fines/lump) iron ore exports were also down 4% at 2.15 MnT in Jun’17 against 2.24 MnT in May’17.
Majority of the iron ore exported from South Africa is from Saldanha Bay port followed by Richard’s Bay port.
China accounted for 59% share in South Africa iron ore exports
The largest importer of South African iron ore China retains the first position for H1 CY17 as well. China imported 18.7 MnT iron ore from South Africa. China’s imports of iron ore from South Africa are down on yearly premises as it was 21.07 MnT in H1 CY16.
Other major importers of South African ore in H1 CY17 were – South Korea (2.52 MnT), Hong Kong (2.18 MnT) and India (1.84 MnT).
