South Africa: Iron Ore Exports Down 23% M-o-M in Sept’17

South Africa, world’s 3rd largest iron ore exporter after Australia and Brazil has exported 5.18 MnT in Sept’17, according to the trade data released by South African Customs.
South African iron ore exports have decreased by 23% M-o-M in the Sept’17 against 6.69 MnT in Aug’17. However it was 12% up on yearly basis compared to Sept’16 which was 4.62 MnT.

During Jan-Sept’17, South Africa exported 49.09 MnT iron ore up 5% against same period last fiscal which was 46.83 MnT.

In Sept’17, an agglomerated (pellets/concentrate) iron ore exports were down by 20% M-o-M to 3.49 MnT, against 4.36 MnT in Aug’17. However, on yearly basis imports were down by 29% in Sept’17 against 2.71 MnT in Sept’16.

Similarly the non-agglomerated (fines/lump) iron ore exports were down by 27% to 1.69 MnT in Sept’17 against 2.33 MnT in Aug’17. It was also down by 12% Y-o-Y in Sept’17 against 1.91 MnT in Sept’16.

Majority of the iron ore exported from South Africa was Saldanha Bay port followed by Richard’s Bay port.

China continues to remain the largest iron ore importer from South Africa in the month of Sept’17 to 3.69 MnT monthly basis followed by South Korea (0.44 MnT), Japan (0.39 MnT) and India at 0.15 MnT.
