South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Down 56% Y-o-Y in Oct’17

South African Ferrous Scrap Exports Remained Concentrated to Bangladesh, Pakistan and India again in Oct’17.

As per recently released customs data, South Africa has witnessed a sharp fall by 56% Y-o-Y in ferrous scrap exports in Oct’17. The country exported 0.04 MnT ferrous scrap in Oct’17 while South Africa’s exports were at 0.09 MnT in Oct’16. Exports volumes recorded in Oct’16 were highest during CY16.

On M-o-M basis ferrous scrap exports showed a rise of 33% in Oct’17 as exports were 0.03 MnT in Sept’17.

During first ten months of CY17, ferrous scrap exports from South Africa summed up to 0.38 MnT, down 30% against 0.54 MnT exports during the same period in CY16.

Majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa have been done through major ports like Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Pakistan remained largest importer of South African ferrous scrap –

Pakistan continued to remain the largest importer of South African ferrous scrap so far in CY17 with 0.14 MnT imports during Jan-Oct’17. However, India imported 0.12 MnT ferrous scrap during the same period. Pakistan and India occupied 37% & 33% shares of total ferrous scrap exports from South Africa respectively during Jan-Oct’17.

India’s ferrous scrap imports from South Africa during ten months of CY17 fell to half against same time frame of last year.

In Oct’17, Bangladesh doubled its ferrous scrap imports from South Africa on M-o-M against 0.01 MnT imports in Sept’17. India and Pakistan each imported 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap in Oct’17. While other major importers like South Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam have been registering nil imports since last three months from South Africa.
