South Africa: Chrome Ore Exports Shrinks By 9% M-o-M in Jan’17

According to preliminary custom data, South Africa Chrome Ore export witnessed a substantial decline of 9% to 0.86 MnT in Jan’17 as compared to the previous month. In Dec’16 the South African Chrome Ore exports stood at around 0.95 MnT.

However on yearly basis, South African Chrome Ore exports are up by 98% in Jan’17 against 0.44 MnT in Jan’16.

In CY16 South Africa shipped 9.6 MnT of Chrome Ore, up 7% against 9.04 MnT in CY15.

China’s Chrome Ore Imports

China remains the largest importer of South African Chrome ore which imported 0.51 MnT in Jan’17, followed by Mozambique. Hong Kong, which also imports for Chinese mills, was the third largest importer in 2016 but witnessed low imports in Dec’16 and Jan’17. Moreover, there has been a decrease in China’s Chrome Ore imports by 15% on M-o-M basis.

China imports most of its Chrome Ore ore requirement from South Africa and Turkey.
