The Supreme Court has allowed 18 mines to resume iron ore mining in Karnataka, the country's second-largest supplier, after a suspension of over a year on environment concerns, Justice Aftab Alam and Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai said on Monday.
These mines can start operations from immediate effect said sources though actual output might take sometime as mines were closed for almost one year.
It was also reported that these mines can produce only 30-40% of their total production capacity. Also ore produced will be sold through e-auction.But question remains who will decide the base price and what will be profit sharing ration between miners and government.
The Supreme Court last year had also banned iron ore mining in Bellary, Chitradurga and Tumkur districts of Karnataka citing environmental violations, and asked a government body to carry out an environmental impact assessment.
