Ship Recycling Import Volumes to India Down 42% in Nov’19

Imports of scrapped ship imports to India – Alang, Gujarat has registered sharp fall of around 42.2% M-o-M in Nov’19, as per the data maintained by SteelMint.

As per data, scrapped ships import in India reached at 66,586 LDT in Nov’19, imports plunged by around 48,678 LDT M-o-M as against 115,264 LDT in Oct’ 19. However, ship breaking scrap import in Bangladesh surged by 5.3% to 70,969 LDT & in Pakistan by 679.7% to 9,193 LDT in Nov’19, M-o-M.

The reason behind a significant drop in imports marked, rise in scrapped ship prices by USD 20/LT M-o-M in both Tankers & Containers along with sharp surge in imports of ships by 148% in Oct’19. As per GMS data, scrapped ships import in India was recorded at 115,264 LDT in Oct’19 as against 46,494 LDT in Sep’ 19.

Also on yearly comparison, the India’s ship breaking import volumes have decreased by 68.41% in Nov’19 as against 210,793 LDT in Nov’ 18.

The total numbers of ship demolish in India, Bangladesh & Pakistan was marked at 406 in Jan-Nov’19.

Inline with this, during Jan-Nov the total number of demolished ships in Alang was marked at 166 number in 2019, however the number decreased by 30% on Y-o-Y basis as against 238 number of ships in 2018.

In the total imports of CY19, Bangladesh procured around 212 (52%) scrapped ships & Pakistan demolished around 28 (7%) number of ships.

Furthermore in Nov’19, the total quantity beached in the port of Alang, Gadani & Chittagong was stood at around 246,463 LDT as against 278,506 LDT a month ago.
