Russian coal exports in Nov’17 have reached to a 5-month high, as per the data provided by customs.
Coal exports rose 44% on the month to 18.39 MnT in Nov’17 compared with 12.79 MnT in Oct’17, which were also 27% higher on the year compared to 14.5 MnT in Nov’16.
Total coal exported from Russia during Jan’17-Nov’17 stood 166.51 MnT, which is 11% more than the levels recorded during the same period in 2016. Looking at the current trend, the country is likely to cross its export total of 169.12 MnT coal which was achieved in CY16 (Jan’16-Dec’16).
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Shipments of all the major coal grades had increased over the month, except for Met coke, whose export fell 31% on the month to 0.2 MnT in Nov’17.
Non-Coking coal export rose 35% M-o-M to 13.32 MnT, whereas Coking coal exports witness a growth of 108% M-o-M to 2.58 MnT in Nov’17.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
UK was the major coal importer from Russia in Nov’17.The country had recorded a mammoth growth of 431% M-o-M in Nov’17 coal imports, to acquire its highest monthly coal shipment in CY17.
UK had received 2.07 MnT coal in Nov’17, which was also 120% higher on the year compared with 0.94 MnT in Nov’16.
China had received the second-largest coal shipment during the month, with imports of 2.06 MnT. Imports were almost unchanged from the previous month, but had increased 24% Y-o-Y compared with 1.66 MnT in Nov’16.
South Korea came behind at third with import of 1.77 MnT coal. Coal import from South Korea was down both on the monthly as well as on the yearly basis.

Russia Coal Imports:
Russia had received the highest monthly coal shipment of 2.05 MnT in Nov’17 for the current year 2017.
Total Russian coal import has reached 18.46 MnT during the Jan’17-Nov’17 period, with majority of the coal being supplied from its neighbouring country Kazakhstan (15.34 MnT).
