Port Richards Bay Suspends Operation On Poor Weather Condition

Richards Bay port closed for incoming ships owing to poor weather conditions since 16th Jan’17.

Richards Bay, the largest South African port for Thermal coal shipments noticed an operation halt yesterday. The Port of Richards Bay Deputy Harbour Master announced that the port was closed for incoming vessels from 6am on 16th Jan’17 owing to adverse weather conditions.

At the situation on Monday from 6 am morning the wind had been gusting above 40knts SW’ly and the swell of 3.5 to 4m height. While, port control and pilots on duty are monitoring the situation which is unsafe for pilot boarding now.

Currently movements are suspended till further notice. The following movements are affected.

Affected Terminals
305 IN Coal Terminals of R bay
306 OUT/IN
303 OUT/IN
208 IN Terminals of R bay

Richards Bay port operation comprises about 0.2-0.3 MnT coal loading every day. While owing to this operation halt, may result in decline of monthly coal shipment from South Africa.
