Pakistan Coal Imports Up 37% M-o-M in Aug’17

Thriving under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, Pakistan coal import has been increasing vigorously in CY17. The country has so far imported 7.25 MnT coal this year till Aug’17, according to the data compiled by CoalMint Research.

Pakistan’s coal buying activity picked up after the monsoon period, as the country recorded growth of 37% in monthly imports to 1.08 MnT in Aug’17, which was also 79% higher on the year compared with 0.60 MnT in Aug’16.

About half of the coal imports were taken by power generation companies during the month, with Huaneng Shandong Ruyi Energy acquiring more than 35% of the total monthly coal imports in Aug’17. The company operates the Sahiwal Power Project (1320 MW) which is the Pakistan’s first supercritical power plant.

With an additional 8220 MW coal fired power plants under the CPEC likely to be commissioned in the coming years, the contract will help Pakistan’s coal imports to surge manifolds.

Major Coal Exporters:
Majority of the Pakistan’s coal imports comes from South Africa and Indonesia, with Russia and Mozambique providing an alternate source of imports.

During Aug’17, Pakistan had acquired coal only from South Africa and Indonesia. South African coal exports were recorded 0.92 MnT in Aug’17 with an increase of 48% M-o-M, while Indonesia supplied the remaining coal quantity of 0.16 MnT during the month.
