- Move positions Oman as GCC’s pioneer in maritime sustainability
- Integrated facility provides cleaner alternative to South Asian yards
Oman is setting up the Middle East’s first integrated green ship recycling facility at Khatmat Malaha, North Batinah, in partnership with Green Wheel Recycling Middle East. This positions Oman as a pioneer in maritime sustainability in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
Designed to dismantle over 70 vessels annually and produce 2 million tonnes (mnt) of low-carbon steel, the project directly supports Oman’s 2050 net-zero target while strengthening the circular economy.
Strategically, the facility positions Oman to capture rising demand for compliant ship recycling as global regulations (EU SRR, Hong Kong Convention) tighten, creating an advantage over South Asian yards, which are often criticised for unsafe practices.
By supplying certified low-carbon steel, Oman could gain premiums in export markets while reducing domestic reliance on high-emission inputs. The project is expected to generate 2,000 jobs and accelerate non-oil GDP diversification, underlining Oman’s intent to emerge as a regional leader in green industrial innovation.
