Bhubaneswar: Odisha has decided to increase iron ore production to 57 million tonne in the current financial year.

The total iron ore production was 52 million tonnes in the last financial year i.e.2012-13.

As per sources the government has decided to increase the state’s iron ore production to 57 million tonnes and accordingly has set targets for different mining circles.

The highest target has been set for Joda mining circle in the Keonjhar District at 44 million tonnes, which was 40 million tonnes last year (2012-13).

Similarly 13 million tonne target has been set for the Koida circle in the Sundargarh District.

The iron ore production was 12 million tonne at the circle in the last financial year.

The state government has set these iron ore production target after considering the issues like environmental effects of mining and the actual requirement of the user industries.

It is worth mentioning that the honorable Supreme Court has expressed its displeasure on the issue of environmental pollution due to mining at Karnataka.

On the other hand miners are optimistic that iron ore production will increase this financial year after opening up of several mines which are closed due to allegations of illegal mining.
