India’s largest iron ore producing state – Odisha has been witnessing sharp increase in iron ore production. Increased production from operational mines has escalated state’s iron ore production in this fiscal. On monthly premises, Odisha iron ore production has fallen 19% M-o-M to 7.26 MnT in Jan’17.
So far in this fiscal (till Jan’17) Odisha’s iron ore production was recorded at 75.61 MnT up 29% Y-o-Y. In the same period last fiscal, the figure stood at 58.46 MnT. Odisha government expects state’s iron ore production to touch 100 MnT in FY17.
Rungta Mines – the largest iron ore producer in Odisha witnessed sharp reduction of 36% M-o-M in its iron ore production in Jan’17. It produced 1.40 MnT iron ore in Jan’17 against 2.19 MnT in Dec’16. Iron ore production of other major miners remained as follows: AMTC mines – 0.81 MnT, Serajuddin Mines – 0.61 MnT and KJS Ahluwalia mines – 0.45 MnT
State-owned miner – OMC produced 0.63 MnT iron ore in Jan’17, up by 24% M-o-M.
Talking about captive mines, Tata Steel’s iron ore production stood at 0.81 MnT and that of SAIL was at 0.50 MnT in Jan’17.

Odisha’s merchant mines iron ore production vs dispatches in FY17 : Iron ore production of Odisha’s merchant mines stood at 58.25 MnT during Apr-Jan’17. Iron ore dispatches to domestic market (excluding movement for exports) in the same time frame was recorded at 51.06 MnT. Amid higher global prices and good realizations, iron ore exports from Odisha has also observed significant increase in this fiscal.
