NTPC is gearing up to start coal production from its second captive coal mine.
NTPC Ltd has been awarded Mine Developer-cum-Operator(MDO) contract for its Dulanga mine in Odisha and expects to start mining operation in the current fiscal FY18. Dulanga mine has a estimated production capacity of 7 MnT per annum.
NTPC being the major power producer has stepped into coal mining to meet its growing coal demand. The company made debut in coal mining last fiscal with coal production in Pakri-Barwadih coal mine.
After achieving mining contract for Dulanga mine, NTPC now expects a production target of 3 MnT during this fiscal.
Pakri-Barwadih mine with an estimated capacity of 15 MnT per annum, was allotted by the government as the basket mine to meet the shortfall of its power station.
NTPC has so far extracted more than 0.46 MnT of coal from this mine and has successfully dispatched 58 coal rakes (around 0.202 MnT coal) to its Barh power Station located in Bihar.
NTPC has now 10 coal blocks in its account. Earlier, the company had been allocated 8 coal mines by the government of India.
In addition to these mines, the government has also allocated Kudanali-Luburi coal block jointly to NTPC and the state of Jammu and Kashmir, with NTPC having two-third share in coal reserves.
Moreover, Banhardih coal block, allocated earlier to Jharkhand Urja Utpadan Nigam Ltd, is now being assigned to Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (PVUNL), a joint venture between NTPC and Jharkhand government.
Total geological reserve of the coal blocks is estimated 7.3 BnT, NTPC expects to produce 107 MnT coal per annum from these coal blocks.
