NTPC officials have raised concern over the disruption of coal supply in two of its power plants.
Kahalgaon Super thermal power station, located in Bihar and Farakka Super thermal power station in West Bengal both procure coal from Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) for its operation. However, coal supply has not been regulated since 29 Dec’16 following Landslide incident in Lalmatia coal mine in Jharkhand.
Lalmatia coal mines, one of the largest coal mines of ECL, caters half of the ECL’s annual production by 17 MnT coal extractions. Coal mining operation has taken set back after several workers lost their life in the Landslide incident.
Kahalgaon Plant having capacity of 2340 MW, has a daily coal requirement of 36600 MT, while Farakka Plant of 2100 MW capacity requires 24200 MT coal daily. At present, Farakka plant has coal stock available for 14 days, while in Kahalgaon Plant Coal stock will last for only 9 days as on 3 Jan’16.
