NTPC Ltd has stepped into mining industry with a view to ensure uninterrupted coal availability for its power plants.
NTPC Ltd, India’s largest power producer has started production from its captive mine at Pakri Barwadih, located in Jharkhand. The movement of first coal rake of NTPC’s Pakri-Barwadih coal mine was flagged-off in a ceremony held in Ranchi.
The mining operations have started 10 years after it was allocated coal block by Union Government in 2006.The mine has been facing delays and allegations over the appointment of contractors.
Pakri barwadih has block area of 46.26 sq. km with an ultimate capacity of 18 MnT per annum. About 2-3 MnT of coal is likely to be produced from the mine next year. Coal will be supplied to NTPC’s various power station as basket source; initially, Barh Power Station located in Bihar will be supplied one coal rake daily.
In order to ensure sustainable growth in power generation, Government of India has offered help by allocating 10 mines to NTPC having total estimated reserve of 7.3 BnT with ultimate mining capacity of 107 MnT per annum.
NTPC contributes nearly 24% of country’s power generation and has the vision to become world’s leading power company, by having 130 GW generating capacity by 2032.
