India, one of the giants in coal import, has imported about 2.2 MnT more coal in Oct’15 than Sept’15.
India, the world’s third largest coal importer and producer of coal, has imported 13.1 MnT of coal in Oct’15 against 10.9 MnT in Sep’15, though registered 14%Y-o-Y decline.
India had imported about 15.1 MnT of non coking coal in October the previous year.
Amid Coal India’s increased production, and measures to increase supply to Indian power producers, power players preferred imported material to indigenous for two reasons-better quality and cost effectiveness.
Leading Discharging Ports
Mundra and Krishnapatnam ports were the major destinations for holding non coking imports in the month. They received about 2.7 and 2.2 MnT of non coking coal respectively in Oct’15.

Indonesian and South African coal, as usual, dominated the imports. Indonesia exported about 9.4 MnT of non-coking coal, registering a decline of 34% against the previous month. South Africa exported about 2.1 MnT non-coking coal in Oct’15.
