NMDC to Start Commercial Pellet Sales Soon from Karnataka

India’s largest iron ore producer -NMDC is all set to start commercial pellet sales from its plant in Karnataka.

According to market sources report to SteelMint, the pellets produced during trial production at NMDC’s pellet plant is expected to be out in the market for commercial sales soon and the Board is working on plans related to its pricing etc.

NMDC has a pellet plant with an installed capacity of 1.2 MnT pa at Donimalai in Karnataka as a part of its beneficiation programme. Apart from this, it has also set up a beneficiation plant of 1.8 MnT pa in Karnataka.

Low grade iron ore fines procured from NMDC’s Donimalai mines will undergo beneficiation which will feed the pellet plant to produce pellets of grade Fe 65%.

The BF grade pellets manufactured will be of size ranging from 6-16 mm with silica content less than 3% and alumina content less than 2%.

NMDC’s iron ore sourcing for its Karnataka pellet plant

NMDC has been sourcing iron ore fines (including low grade fines) from its Donimalai mines in Karnataka via e-auctions. So far in this fiscal (till Oct’16) it has sourced 48,000 MT iron ore fines.

In the recent Karnataka e-auction conducted on 6 Oct’16, it sourced 8,000 MT fines (Fe 60.2%) from its Donimalai mines at bid price of INR 1,909/MT (basic). Apart from this it also procured 4,000 MT of low grade fines (Fe 58%) at bid price of INR 1,679/MT (basic).
