Nepal: Rebar prices ease amid festive slowdown

  • Power disruptions constrain production, limiting price drop
  • Sponge iron, billet, wire rod prices decline

Nepal’s domestic rebar market remained largely stable during the week ended 17 October 2026, with cash prices easing slightly to NPR 85,000/t and bank-guarantee (BG) prices to NPR 87,000-89,000/t.

Subdued demand amid the festive season and fluctuations in raw material prices weighed on market sentiment. Construction activity typically slows during this period as festivals interrupt business operations, limiting fresh steel procurement and keeping buyers cautious.

Meanwhile, IF-EAF wire rod prices declined by $5/t to around $560/t CNF Raxaul, tracking the sharp drop in Indian steel prices and reflecting weaker regional market sentiment.

Meanwhile, frequent power disruptions have affected steel production, forcing mills to curtail output and increasing operating costs. These challenges have constrained production efficiency and limited mills’ ability to maintain consistent supplies, providing some support to domestic prices despite weak demand.

In the regional market, sponge iron prices declined by $3/t w-o-w to $345/t CPT Raxaul. Billet prices also eased by $2/t to around $486/t CNF Raxaul.

Overall, Nepal’s rebar market continues to face a mixed outlook, with seasonal demand weakness offset by production constraints and elevated operating costs. Buying is likely to remain cautious in the near term, while price movements will depend on demand recovery, power availability and regional raw material trends.
