Aluminium major National Aluminium Company (NALCO) aims to invest to INR 2500 crore in the next five years on renewable sources of energy to meet a part of its power requirement to run its operations.
“In another five years, we will be doubling our brownfield capacity at Angul smelter plant. We are also coming up with a 0.6 MnT smelter plant at Kamakhyanagar in Dhenkanal district. In future, 12 per cent of the power that we will consume will come from green energy. It will see an investment of INR 2,500 crore”, said V Balasubramanyam, director (production) of NALCO said Energy Conclave-2017 organised by Confederation of Indian Industry.
Presently, the central PSU consumes around about 1000 Mw of power to run its operations.
The site chosen for the new smelter is close to Gajamara in Dhenkanal district where NALCO is teaming up with power utility NTPC for setting up a 2400 Mw coal-fired power station. This power project estimated to cost INR 14,000 crore, will be implemented by a joint venture company titled NTPC-NALCO Power Company Ltd.
The proposed smelter’s capacity is pegged at 0.6 MnT per annum. The new smelter is expected to go on stream in nearly four years. This state-of-the-art smelter will make use of the latest in aluminium smelting technology.
NALCO is also going for brownfield expansion of its existing smelter project at Angul whose nameplate capacity is 0.46 mtpa. The navratna company has a Capex (capital expenditure) of INR 10,000 crore to add 0.5 mtpa capacity to this smelter.
The PSU has already invested INR 1,260 crores in the green energy including 200 (50×4) mw wind mills.
“Another INR 850 crore investment proposal has been approved for 20 Mw solar plant in Madhya Pradesh and another 50 Mw solar plant for which we are scouting for locations, he added.
