As per the trade data provided by Mongolian customs, coal export from the country has declined 37% on the month to 1.22 MnT in Feb’18, compared with 1.93 MnT in Jan’18.
The drop in exports is attributed to the bottleneck at the border which Mongolia shares with its major customer-China, which is affecting the trade between the two countries. On the yearly basis, Mongolian coal exports had decreased 45% from 2.2 MnT in Feb’17.
During the first two months of the CY18 (Jan-Feb), the country has exported 3.15 MnT coal, which was 34% lower on the year compared with the export total of 4.79 MnT recorded in Jan’17-Feb’17.
Country-wise Coal Exports:
China had received 98% of the total Mongolian coal exports in Feb’18. However, coal exports to China was down 36% M-o-M to 1.19 MnT in Feb’18, which was also 45% lower on the year compared with 2.17 MnT in Feb’17.
The remaining coal quantity was exported to UK and Hong Kong in Feb’18. UK’s share of coal had rose from 1,251 MT in Jan’18 to 23,794 MT in Feb’18. Coal export to Hong Kong had decreased 92% M-o-M to 4,782 MT in Feb’18, compared with 58,028 MT in Jan’18.
Of the total coal quantity, Mongolia had exported 1.16 MnT Bituminous coal in Feb’18; while there was no export of Anthracite coal during the month.
