India: MRAI hosts its 3rd Annual General Meeting & Conference

Metal Recycling Association of India (MRAI) held its AGM and Conference on 1 Aug, 2014 at Taj Lands Hotel End, Mumbai, in which over 400 delegates from India had attended the event.

Shri Kalraj Mishra, Union Cabinet Minister (MSME), had inaugurated the conference.  President of MRAI, Mr. Ikbal Nathani  while addressing had highlighted that various issues are being faced by the Metal Recycling Industry that includes import duty on Metal Scrap, impact of SAD on manufacturing units, inverted duty structure caused owing to FTA’s and unorganized recycling sector.

Mr. Mishra had also addressed these issues and stated that recycling industry should be supported. It should be given priority and promoted as like in China. He also assured that the government will focus on the above stated problems and try to resolve it as soon as possible. Advisor of Planning Commission, Dr. Suman Kaushik had enumerated the plans made by the planning commission to form a sub-committee for recycling industry to focus these problems.

Delegates at the conference had attended sessions. Also, interactive panels have examined issues that starting from the government’s role in metal recycling to challenges faced with shipping and customs related matters and contractual/legal issues in day to day business. Expert speaker like Dr. Ram Upendra Das was also present in the event, sharing his opinions on free trade agreement and its adverse impact on industry. For the first time ever, selected representatives from container freight stations made presentations on the special benefits and services that can be provided to MRAI members.

MRAI looks forward to welcome all the participants back on 5 & 6 Feb, 2015 for its 2nd International Metal Recycling Conference in Mumbai, in which over 1,000 delegates from all over the world are expected.
