Japan imposes sanctions on Russia; coal imports to be affected

As Japan’s oil and LNG reserves are currently sufficient to meet domestic requirements, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s call to impose sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine is unlikely to endanger Japan’s energy security in the short term. However, Japan relies on coal imports from Russia. In 2021, Japan imported 20 mnt of coal from Russia, about 12% of total imports.
