Japan – a major exporter of ferrous scrap has witnessed marginal fall of 4% M-o-M in its ferrous scrap exports in Sept’17.As per recent customs data, Japan has exported 0.68 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’17 compared to 0.71 MnT in Aug’17.
On the yearly basis, ferrous scrap exports from Japan witnessed growth of 10% Y-o-Y in Sept’17.The country had exported 0.62 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’16.
The country exported 6.01 MnT ferrous scrap during the period of first nine months of CY17 (Jan-Sept’17). A drop of 9% Y-o-Y has noted in its exports against 6.59 MnT ferrous scrap exports in the same period in CY16.
Japan’s domestic scrap demand remains strong as this is a peak construction season. Japanese traders justify the strong demand for scrap in the domestic market by incremental billet exports from Japan. Following this, the Japanese companies have increased their domestic scrap purchases resulting in less scrap exports.
Japan mainly exports special grade H2 scrap along with other preferred grades as shredded, HS, Sindachi and H1.Major ports for scrap exports were Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Yokohama in Japan.
South Korea remained preferred destination for Japan’s ferrous scrap exports –
South Korea continued to remain preferred destination for the Japanese ferrous scrap exports with 2.91 MnT imports occupying 48% share of total exports from Japan during Jan-Sept’17, followed by China (1.29 MnT) and Vietnam (1.13 MnT) and Taiwan (0.34 MnT) respectively.
South Korea imported 0.37 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’17 with 28% M-o-M rise against 0.29 MnT scrap imports in Aug’17.While Vietnam and China both imported 0.13 MnT ferrous scrap in Sept’17.
Other major importers were Bangladesh and Taiwan with 0.02 MnT and 0.01 MnT ferrous scrap imports in Sept’17 from Japan respectively.
South Korea registered rise by 14% while Taiwan nearly halved its ferrous scrap imports from Japan during Jan-Sept’17 against same time frame in CY16.
