Japanese coal import in Sep’17 has fallen for the third straight month, according to the customs data.
Coal import in Sep’17 decreased 8% M-o-M to 15.47 MnT in comparison with 16.77 MnT in Aug’17. Monthly imports were also 10% lower on the year compared with 17.13 MnT in Sep’16.
Total coal imports during the first 9 months of CY17 (Jan’17-Sep’17) has witnessed minor increase of 1% Y-o-Y to 146.76 MnT, compared with 145.37 MnT in Jan’16-Sep’16.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Non-Coking coal imports reached 4-month low of 10.33 MnT in Sep’17, falling 12% M-o-M. While Coking coal imports increased 8% M-o-M to 3.44 MnT during the same period.
Among the other major coal grades, imports of Anthracite and Pet Coke had fell in Sep’17, while import of Met coke had increased 125% M-o-M to 0.09 MnT during the month.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Australia remained the top coal exporter to Japan in Sep’17, followed by Indonesia, Russia, US, Canada and Colombia. Among the top 6 coal exporters, only the US and Colombia have reported growth in monthly coal supplies to Japan.
Australian coal export fell 6% M-o-M to 9.53 MnT in Sep’17. Export from the country was also down 13% Y-o-Y compared with 10.94 MnT in Sep’16.
Indonesian coal exports dropped 15% M-o-M to 2.15 MnT in Sep’17, which were also 6% lower on the year compared with 2.28 MnT in Sep’16.
Russia, the third-largest coal exporter, witnessed fall of 22% both on the monthly and yearly basis in Sep’17 coal supplies to Japan.
