Iran’s steel production in the first seven months of the current Persian year (21 Mar-22 Oct’21) registered a significant fall as against the same period last year, according to recent data released by the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA).
- Iran produced 15.77 million tonnes (mn t) of semi-finished steel in the first seven months of the current Persian year, down 11% y-o-y. Billets and blooms accounted for 9.33 mn t out of the total semi-finished steel output, a significant decline of 15% while slabs production was down by 5% y-o-y to 6.44 mn t.
- The total production of finished steel stood at 11.03 mn t in Mar-Oct’21, lower by 8% y-o-y as against 11.95 mn t seen in the corresponding period last year (CPLY).
- Production of long and flat steel in the period under review stood at 6.28 mn t and 4.74 mn t, down by 3% and 13%, respectively.
- As per statistics released by ISPA, Iran’s direct reduced iron (DRI) production stood at 17.38 mn t in Mar-Oct’21, down 4% y-o-y when compared to 18.10 mn t in CPLY.
The decline in production comes as steel mills were forced to lower electricity consumption amidst widespread blackouts in the scorching summer. It seems that power outages may continue to trouble the steel sector.
Apparent steel consumption drops: Iran’s apparent steel consumption in the first seven months of the current Persian year also registered a drop. The consumption in flats fell by 13% while that in longs fell by 12%, y-o-y.
